Appeal Letter from LUMS
Dear Friends

Our last Appeal Letter to you, September 19, 2008, was a sad time for the Lutheran Urban Mission Society.  Just as our brothers and sisters on the Downtown Eastside experienced sadness, anxiousness and a reality of homelessness on a day to day basis, we also shared those same feelings.
Officially on September 1st we moved into our new home at 360 Jackson Avenue.  We adjoin the Bill Hennessy Place which is a low rent high rise building, which is owned by the United Church Social Housing Society.  We are extremely excited about our new home and they are equally excited to have us.  Having a home is having a place, a family, friendships, relationships and a sense of belonging.

A question could be asked where does our rent money go...the money that you donate?   Rent monies will go towards supporting the Bill Hennessy Place for their operating budget and special projects such as elevator modernization, roof repair, and upgrading of suites which in turn helps keep rents affordable for the low-income people residing in the building.

LUMS receives no financial support from the BC Synod/National Church ELCIC, Provincial Government or funding from the B.C. Gaming Commission Grant Funds. We rely on private donations to support this ministry. Our expenses have increased with the addition of rent and other related expenses along with the continued work of LUMS on the Downtown Eastside, so your financial assistance is very crucial.

There are several ways that you can donate.  We have arranged online giving to LUMS through www.canadahelps.org, plus LUMS is an officially recognized charity of United Way and you can donate either by a single donation or through monthly routine salary deductions.   Had you thought as a lasting legacy to include LUMS in your Will?  A bequest affirms your lifelong support of the important work that is carried out by LUMS.  Please remember LUMS’ ministry when you do.

Please make a cheque payable to “The Lutheran Urban Mission Society”.  An envelope with our new permanent address is enclosed for your convenience. We look forward to your continued generous support and pray that together we can do more to help make life better for those in need.

Yours in Christ
