The Lutheran Urban Mission Society is pleased to present the L.U.M.S. Documentary series “DTES PORTRAITS”. These seven short video documentaries were co-produced with innovative production Company “Broad Minded Media”. These recently filmed documentaries examine characters and issues that evolve around Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside from a Christian Perspective. The complexities of poverty, homelessness, addiction, and gentrification are among some of the themes explored.
The seven minute videos are posted here, or can be viewed from YouTube.com (where you can subscribe to all our videos, view them full-screen, or read or post comments by viewers).
We invite churches to obtain a DVD copy along with discussion manual to show and share information with your congregation by contacting the LUMS office at 604-682-2362 or by email lumsadmin@lums.ca
These videos are one of the ways we fulfil our ministry goal : to participate ecumenically in ministry with the marginalized; to provide a vehicle whereby Lutheran congregations and individuals can participate directly in ministry; to focus this within the context of a worshipping community; to foster deeper consciousness within our congregations of the needs and gifts of the inner city; to help our congregations and individual members understand mission as present in our neighbourhoods; to mobilize a broad range of human and financial resources to enable involvement in ministry with the urban marginalized; to facilitate people to use and develop their gifts in inner city ministry; and to promote and encourage advocacy for and with those who feel threatened.

Vancouver is known as
the fourth best city and has been rated as the top city to live in. Meanwhile, the
downtown East side, just a few blocks away from the city core, is shocking for tourists
and scathed at by many. The Vancouver public and residents and workers of the downtown
East side shared solutions on how to ameliorate the homeless situation at the ' Grand
March for Housing', an event that took place across British Columbia
